: Preview of Mac OS X "Tiger"

May 4th, 2004, 11:24 AM
Apple Announcement (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2004/may/04wwdc.html)

Steve Jobs to Kick Off Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference 2004
with Preview of Mac OS X "Tiger"

Can I catch a lift to WWDC with any ehMacers' ?

May 4th, 2004, 11:35 AM
I dunno, "Tiger" just doesn't have the same ring to me as Jaguar, Panther and the other cats they've used so far.

"What OS are you running?"

"Oh, I'm running Tiger"

Also it begs the question: will Apple be able to pay Tony the Tiger more than Kellogg's to get him to endorse 10.4? smile.gif

Ttttttttt- rific!

This version should cost us $179 to $199. Start your ranting! ;)

I am going to go place my order.... graemlins/love2.gif

Seems like a reasonable price to me.

Lessee. 200 bucks to update windows... or OS X

windows.... OS X...

windows.... OS X...

May 4th, 2004, 01:33 PM
Hey, why not borrow from the past, Apple?

"Mac OS X. Put a Tiger in your Mac."

May 4th, 2004, 01:38 PM
Looks like I'm skipping Panther and holding out for Tiger then. Quite a lame name I must admit.

May 4th, 2004, 01:43 PM
Pity God didn't create more cool sounding cats.

Well, it beats the hell out of "Longhorn". Poor M$; they can't even get their name right. They see themselves as a proud and massive mountain in BC, whereas the rest of the world sees them as a load of long-horned BULL :D

May 4th, 2004, 02:11 PM
I see Longhorn as someone who is well endowed and rather excited. Of which Microsoft is neither.

May 4th, 2004, 02:55 PM

Why did they go with Tiger? It just sounds lame. What's next, Domestic House Cat? I think they should have just given up on the feline names and moved on to some other theme.

I wonder when the first Mac bashers will start calling it Tigger.

Oh well, I hope that the new version of X is so damn cool that the name doesn't matter.

May 4th, 2004, 03:02 PM
What's next, Domestic House Cat?

No, Lynx Canadensis ;)

I wonder when the first Mac bashers will start calling it Tigger.

I am more wondering how long until the first Tigger themes/desktop pictures start coming out. Remember, the wonderful thing about Tiggers is Tiggers are wonderful things!

May 4th, 2004, 03:44 PM
What's next, Domestic House Cat? No, Kitty. Mac OS X 10.5 "Kitty"

May 4th, 2004, 05:21 PM
I looked up cat names....
Cat Names (http://www.google.ca/search?q=cache:f1OgZWCsH3kJ:www.nhm.org/cats/+cats+&hl=en&ie=UTF-8)

My favorite “ False Sabertooth” sort of gives Apple an out if things are not quite up to snuff.

May 4th, 2004, 07:59 PM
What about the names of domestic cats, such as angora, siamese, tabby, sphynx, persian. I know there are many, many more. Why not move away from the wild and ferocious kind and adopt the more sophisticated and domestic? After all, isn't Apple's OS supposed to "purrrrrr" rather than "growl"?

May 4th, 2004, 08:06 PM
Macaholic - Longhorn is named after a bar that many Microsoft employees went to while in Whistler, B.C. Longhorn has some Canadian significance. Kind of shameful/interesting isn't it?

May 4th, 2004, 08:25 PM
Meh... I'll take it, Chealion smile.gif

May 4th, 2004, 09:47 PM
Hmm... I thought Longhorn was a kind of cattle steer. But, since it's Microsoft, it's probably a "bum steer".

(sh-yuk-yuk-yuk :D graemlins/lmao.gif graemlins/scream.gif tongue.gif graemlins/nuts.gif )

Longhorn graemlins/ptptptptptpt.gif

Look at this Brunswick Tiger Print Bowling Ball

May 4th, 2004, 10:42 PM
Hehe, got my first Mac back on 9.0 and I've had every version within the week it has come out..

10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 (got one of the first copies in Seattle), and now 10.4!! Time to start savin =)

May 4th, 2004, 11:04 PM
With all these cat names, I'm starting to envision Steve Jobs with a monocle and a white Persian cat. That just doesn't go with the black mock turtle necks! graemlins/lmao.gif

I've been reading the Heritage of Shannara novels, and I think the next OS version should be named after Walker Boh's moor cat, "Rumor".

Mac OS X Rumor

kinda has a ring to it ;)

May 5th, 2004, 01:35 PM
will this be the first 64 bit os?

May 5th, 2004, 03:44 PM
Tiger is okay for Apple. Perhaps another iTunes give away is in the works with Kellogg's? An iTunes code in every box of Frosted Flakes....

"They're grrrrr-eat!!!" ;)

May 5th, 2004, 03:46 PM
i'm starting to get freaked out from these annual releases of OS

May 5th, 2004, 08:52 PM
Well I don't see Tiger crashing and burning like Longhorn did today at HEC.

In a side-by-side demonstration comparing an early version of Longhorn and Windows XP, Allchin showed two PCs with the current and newer operating system displaying memory-intensive graphics.

The Longhorn machine, although slightly better than Windows XP at displaying graphics-heavy Windows, failed to respond when Allchin also tried to bring up another graphics-intensive application, the popular first person shooter game Quake.

Allchin said that the PC was slow and Microsoft said that the demo worked fine in trials.Source (http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=technologyNews&storyID=5040166&pageNumber=1)

Sure, Allchin, sure. I need a mop for the sarcasm.

With all these cat names, I'm starting to envision Steve Jobs with a monocle and a white Persian cat. That just doesn't go with the black mock turtle necks! As long as OS X 10.5 isn't called "Fluffy," things will be fine. graemlins/lmao.gif

Well, let's see Apple's used Puma, Jaguar, and Panther...

There are a lot of cat names under the letter "L", Lion, Lynx, Leopard. I'm kinda partial to Leopard, sorta rolls off the tongue like Jaguar and Panther.

Although Cheetahs are fast, that name just doesn't seem to have the same "oomph" as Puma, Jaguar or Panther.

Bobcat and Wildcat, somehow remind me of construction vehicles like the Bobcat. Actually wasn't Wildcat the name of a snowmobile?

I'm not sure naming OSes after domestic house cats would fly.

Me, I call mine Jackass or Loser most of the time, and that wouldn't instill confidence in the buying public. Nor wouyld your average house cat's flakiness!

May 6th, 2004, 11:18 AM
I refer to our two cats mostly as: "Fleabag" and "Fatty McButterpants". Neither name would prompt me to install an OS on my HD.

"Cougar" might be nice.

Macintosh computers, run on Pussy Power! Since Apple is getting used to charging $150-200 every year for updates, I knew it wouldn't take very long for the word "pussy" to come up in this thread...

May 8th, 2004, 12:45 PM
Macs are grrreeeaaatttt!

May 9th, 2004, 02:13 AM
graemlins/heybaby.gif Pussy is such a fantastic word eh?

I was thinking, in my drunken stupor, that Apple should use names like Python, Cobra, Viper and Copperhead (to name a few) .. see where I'm going with this? graemlins/heybaby.gif Tiger just seems so blah but I love Apple and I won't complain anymore. graemlins/ptptptptptpt.gif

Argh. Now I'm totally craving Frosted Flakes. Unfortunately all I've got is organic raisin bran. Where's my sugar buzz!!??

I'm not sure that naming an OS for a Moor cat belonging to a one armed druid in training would be a good idea.
