My favorite, and the only one I can find that compares to MIRC is XChat Aqua (http://sourceforge.net/projects/xchataqua/). I absolutely love it. :)

A friend of mine uses IRC quite a bit; just downloaded X-Aqua chat to play around. One question I had that he wasn't sure about was security. What port does IRC use? What security do you implement when using IRC? Is there a potential for someone connecting and downloading to my Mac to gain user or root access easily? Any good sites you have crossed that has this info?

IRC typically uses port 6667, though there is no reason to not use another port. IRC is generally plaintext. However, it can be encrypted by means of an SSL connection to the server, if supported.

There is no potential for someone connecting and downloading to your Mac without permission. The ability does exist, however, to transfer files over IRC (a procedure called DCC).
