I've had nothing but shoddy gear to date. I'm not big on the bells and whistles, and I don't need to spend a fortune, but surely there are a couple of mid-range printer slash printer/scanner/copier type thingies that have a decent track record as regards general reliability and durability. Any favourites? All suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance...

From my experience you can't go wrong with Canon. Epson is supposed to be very good with macs as well. Check out C-Net for good referrals.

My best experience to date has been my "Brother 210C" all-in-one. Scans, prints, faxes, and even reads my camera memory cards.
I loved it so much I bought a second one for my wife, and she also has no problems with it.
Highly recomended, at least by me.

Thanks for the suggestion. A hasty google didn't enlighten me as regards C-Net, though. Got a link? Thanks again, Lee
