I'm looking for a 3.5" IDE hard drive enclosure for a 160 to 250 Gig HD which is capable of booting an iMac G4. Canada Computers has a 5.25" Bytecc ME-340F (http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=005502&cid=516), which I believe has an Oxford 911 chipset that as far as I know will allow it to boot OS X, but I'm not sure. Does anyone have one of these and know if it's bootable?

I did manage to find the following from tigerdirect.ca for $74.99:

Hiro 3.5in Aluminum Firewire Hard Drive Enclosure with Oxford 911 Chipset (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=876437&CatId=1204)

But I'm not sure if this is bootable either, and I was also hoping to find something more in the $45-$59 price range.

So if anyone has any suggestions on which enclosures they know to be capable of booting a Mac, please let me know where I can find one of these in Toronto. Thanks!

I never gave it any thought when I bought an enclosure from TigerDirect... I don't think it's a huge issue. I bought a generic model from TigerDirect and it boots just fine.

Actually, FactoryDirect has these excellent Adaptec Firewire/USB enclosures for only $35:

I ended up buying 3 of them and I'm quite pleased.

They also had USB-only units for $20 around boxing day but I think they're long since sold out.

You'll be hard press to find what you want at that price with a Hard Drive. If you have an extra drive kicking around you can pick up an enclosure for that price. I use this (http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=000668&cid=516) case with no issues. CC also have good prices on HDs.
Cheers

Yeah, I'm looking for the enclosure only - already got a hard drive. I called about an hour ago trying to find the case you just mentioned, but they don't have it in stock (even though they list two stores as having 1 on hand). The only one they do have is the ME-340, which I'm not sure if it's bootable.

That looks like a great deal. I'll definitely pick one of those up if I can boot from it. Thanks for the suggestion!

I actully bought my case at a different store on College. It was the second or third computer store west of Computer System Centre. Best bet is too walk around to the different computer stores and price shop.

I got one from MacDoc.

Very happy with it, and at a very reasonable price, I might add.
