Say you turn a Mac mini into a server, running Mac OS X Server. And, you attach a 300GB FireWire-based external hard drive to it. Is it possible to make the server use that external storage? I'm assuming so, but I'd like to make double sure.

Yes it is possible, as long as the storage is always mounted. What data do you want on it?

When I tried to run surver 10.3, I could only install it by tricking the installer into thinking that the mini was valid hardware. ( server looks to make sure you are running a PowerMac or XServe, or oddly enough a PowerBook! )

zarquon - FWIW, 10.4 (Tiger) includes the Mac mini on the acceptable list of computers to install. (The only exclusion is the portable line).
