Hi folks --

My girlfriend has a Mac (iBook) and I'd like to get her a webcam. As a starving artist I can't afford the isight I've heard so much about. Anyone know of any more economical options? The more economical-er the better!

Thanks in advance,
CanuckPete

Won't get anything much cheaper than this one of course the cheaper the price, typically, the worse the quality gets...

What about a cheapy Logitech USB cam and the requisite software (ichatusbcam or IOXperts)? I think that'd be even cheaper than the MacAlly product.

Of course, as Digital Gary mentioned, the quality will be far from spectacular...

Most USB webcams give the same quality. I've used the Macally. It's fine. Plus you get a discount on the utility to make it work with iChat.

Thanks for the advice.

On the advice of a relative I picked up a Creative Labs USB cam. However, we are having no luck getting it to work. Seems as if the Mac is not recognizing the cam at all.

Any thoughts?

Hmmm... interesting. Thanks, HowEver.

Of course that leads me to another question...

If she gets iChat on her Mac, is it compatible with anything that I can run on my pc?

We aren't worried about audio, just video.

Thanks again, guys.

Its compatible with AOL Instant Messenger on the PC side, for both audio AND video. I've done an iChat-to-AOL IM video chat a few times and it works great.

 Exactly! What's the point of trying to videochat using cheap webcams which will produce low frame rates, poor exposure, no auto focus and no mic for audio? I think you'll tire very qiuckly of videochatting if you don't get the quality experience you deserve, like with an iSight. Look for a used one or wait and save your pennies, it will be worth it.

For the video chat they are interested in audio does no matter... :heybaby:
