: Carbon's house-brand FW drives

Does anyone know who make the enclosures that Carbon are using for their in-house FW drives? I was in a while ago and they just side stepped the question. I have a Macally case that I like, but theirs seem to have a couple of benifits. If I could buy it empty ( I have a couple of drives to find cases for ) at a comparable price, I think that it would be quite the trick - assuming that it is the oxford chips as I was told.

I haven't been to Carbon to see them but many of the external firewire solutions sold by OWC, FWDepot, ClubMac, etc... are made by this Taiwanese company, MacPower http://www.macpower.com.tw/. It's kinda neat to see what's available down the manufacturing pipe.

The next part of the question is, has anyone here tried these from Carbon. I'm looking at the LaCie D2-250, and Carbon had their 250G for the same price. At least Carbon will tell what brand the drive is inside ( and I didn't notice that the case had a seal on it like the LaCies do ( as in, break seal - no warentee )

And yet another question:

Anyone seen something like this - firewire, but handles SATA drives?

G5 users want to know!

Thanks.

Ok, now where to buy some of these products? (Locally, I mean... OWC has them) I, too, tried to buy an empty enclosure from Carbon in the past but they wouldn't let me :)

Not the same look, but these are GREAT enclosures (I own 2 of them and spare trays). A simple tray swap takes you from IDE to SATA

I got this one from Carbon (the 250) and its great... great looking and good performer. I too would love them to just see the case - but I guess I'll have to go to the US for that now...

be aware that cooldrives.com (and they also have a number of other aliases they operate under) have been known to list a lot of products on their site that they either do not have or are not authorized to sell

I was in there a week or two ago, and at that point you could only buy the box loaded with a drive.

IIRC, They sell the 250G for $349. There are smaller drives, but I didn't get the prices.

Oddly, they don't advertise them on their web site.

hmm, that's a little pricey.. I can get a 250GB hdd for between $130-150. So I'm spending $200 on an enclosure!! Wow, I think it's time I losen up on the looks of the drive and focus more on saving money... ;)

Nice looking. Nice price. Too bad it's not SATA.

This pricey unit is looking like the best contender for my needs:
