I'm a motorcyclist who can't afford a dedicated biker GPS like the Garmin Zuma. I'd like to use my iPhone 6 with either Apple or Google maps while riding, but I'm worried about data usage. Is it possible to set up a route on either app while online, and then have playback with sound while I'm riding?

I haven't used Google Maps on iPhone in ages. However on Android, you could download entire regions so that you wouldn't need data to navigate (naturally without traffic conditions etc.) I used to keep my home town downloaded, and grabbed Halifax for a trip. Didn't take more than 200MB for both.

This is also possible on google maps for ios

If you were boating, I would have suggested Navionics.app that we used without needing any on-line stuff other than loading maps and/or updates etc., but I would just try a google search for something like 'Mac bikers GPS app;:
https://www.google.ca/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=Mac+bikers+GPS+app&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&gfe_rd=cr&dcr=0&ei=bcEdWurIDsTe8AfI6oOoBg

Lots of hits there for optional apps and reviews.

Or even:
biker navigation GPS without data usage

PS: And there are some good wireless (Bluetooth) EarPods/Buds/phones for audio I just bought for my wife for under $30.00 if needed for audio directions.

Just a thought. ;-)

Good to know. There was some feature disparity at one point. Most times I'm content with Apple Maps, but Street View can be so handy.

@Jazzboy

I'd suggest doing some web searches and check on possible improvements to Apple Maps or Google Maps and avoid unnecessary internet data connections.

Maybe try:
https://www.google.ca/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=is+internet+connection+needed+to+use+Apple+Maps&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&gfe_rd=cr&dcr=0&ei=xPEeWumjHNPM8gf2mL-QBg
and some like:

and maybe this:
How to use your phone's maps without a data connection (http://mashable.com/2015/09/16/offline-maps/#L3.UprJbZ8qd)

Many apps need to have at least the maps of the general area to be travelled downloaded from the 'net prior to any trip to save potentially expensive data downloads.
