Would like any of your thoughts/experiences with MacKeeper.

Thanks in advance.

To be avoided at all costs.

Think of it as being a Trojan rather than an app.

Run as far away from that piece of **** as you can.

If it's already on your computer, you'll need to remove it ASAP.

You can search ehMac to find many, many posts relating to it.

Here's one that has a bunch of info & links (https://www.ehmac.ca/mac-iphone-ipad-ipod-help-troubleshooting/144905-mackeeper-new-info-compilation-links.html) compiled so you can figure out what you're dealing with.

The people behind MacKeeper should be drawn, quartered, shot, and boiled in oil. In whichever order you prefer.

Is it being advertised on ehMac? I would not know as I have my ad blocker makes sure I never see it.

Like I'm sure you gathered, avoid at all costs.

https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html and https://etrecheck.com/ are handy tools to have. Both free (or donationware.) You could always throw in a malware scanner; the name eludes me but it is likewise free.

malwarebytes (https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/), formerly known as "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac" - free and brilliant!

Excuse my loud gasp, but I'm really surprised to read such a post from a member that's been here since 2005!!

I guess not too many visits or noticing previous comments or warnings about that curse during most of that time. :D

Anyway, sure glad you asked before downloading the unnecessary money sucking thing.

Thanks MacU, it sure doesn't hurt to reinforce the advice. :o

BTW: I couldn't believe it the other day when I was having some goofy displaying with some webpages using Safari, so I disabled the AdBlock extension and ended up with a glaring mackeeper ad across the top of the page at both ehmac.ca and mac-forums.com and some other general sites.

Man, it boggles my mind what they must spend on advertising and how many unsuspecting suspects they must trap and suck money out of.

Unfortunately, it seems that such sites don't have much control over what ads appear, which seems a bit odd to me.

I seem to recall at least one concerted campaign to get the new ehMac to give MacKeeper the heave-ho. Obviously it was either unsuccessful or MK has found a way to bypass the blocks.

If I recall that campaign, I believe it was the admins that stated that they had no real specific control over what ads actually appeared.

At least as long as they had to rely on ads to help support and keep the site going.

Then maybe we need a sticky at the top of the Anything Mac category, titled something along the lines of: "Beware of MacKeeper Malware"

The "free" version is the same product but the user needs to run it manually. At least after the firs 30 day free trial. The "paid for subscription" does the scanning automatically.

Just in case some were wondering as I was for a while.

I'll just scan manually for now and especially if and when something seems suspicious.

Don't even bother or try to use it, installing it will doom your machine. You have been warned. Stay away from it by all cost.
