A few friends and I bought some inflatable rafts to enjoy some time on a quiet river, paddling about. We are heading out tonight to give try them out for the first time. I am now thinking of what to do, would be nice to have my phone to snap a picture or two as well as to make a call in case of an emergency. I do not have a waterproof case. I was thinking of just stuffing my iPhone 6 Plus in a large zip lock bag. Would want to do the same with my keys, being they all have batteries now. I am assuming a ziplock bag, properly sealed should be fine in case of a tip over, but not 100% sure. It would be in a pocket in my life vest as well, though the pocket is not water proof. Anyone have any experience with zip lock bags protecting from submersion?

I have seen enough ziplocks fail, especially after the third or fourth time they are sealed, that I cannot recommend them. Possibly double bag it using the freezer bag variety of ziploc?

Otherwise shop around at your local boating or kayak store for small dry bags. They do come in everything from wallet sized to big enough to store a weeks gear, and are a lot tougher than any ziploc. The seal design is also far superior to that plastic zipper.

Obviously if it's important to you it should be carefully secured.

Thanks for that. I did see things out there, floatable waterproof bags made for this very reason, just nothing I can get for this evening. I think I will just leave the phone in the car and use the ziplock for the keys.

Something like this

… … …

I'm sure I saw some waterproof holders at out local Dollar Den type store if you have one similar close to you.

And I understand for protecting any electronic car keys, it's suggested that one just take the Valet Key which is not that vulnerable.

No time tonight to pick one up, not any real loss not having my phone, probably better to just not be connected and enjoy the great outdoors. A shame though, I was just at Canada Computers on Saturday!

Yeah too bad, I wasn't sure if you were driving by one of those type places.. 30 seconds in and out and not having to wait 2 weeks for an amazon delivery :)

I was wondering about that myself, but I guess the limited time allotment had to be used to pickup the beer and inflate the floats at the gas bar. Nothing left over. Gheese… :( ;)

Well it was just not that important, I can survive without a few pictures or access to email for a few short hours. Driving to the other side of KW while pretty much every main road is under construction as they are laying down tracks for a new LRT does not make commuting any fun, plus needing to be out to New Hamburg after that... well I felt no inclination to rush around town for a relaxing evening on the river.

Sorry, I didn't have a tongue-in-cheek icon to use and I sure hope you had a nice fun relaxing time.

i have done it.. ziplock bag.. push out all the air.. then ziplock it and fold back the rest- if you want piece of mind do it in two bags..
I didnt go underwater.. only splash pool and once on the beach placed the phone in my pocket and it did work.. now i am not sure how many times you can reuse the same bag, but i only reused the bag twice.
