: Wanted To Buy Video card for mac pro 1.1

Picked up a mac pro 2.66 (2006) to play some old games and the 256mb video card stutters too often. It has 8 single 1mg chips and the two 1.5 g hdds are raided so other than maybe searching for 8 single 2mg chips, the video card is the way to go. I tried a newer 1g card but no drivers for mac so I am sure I am restricted to the few original options.
Let me know what you have and what you need for it.
Thanks folks.

2 GB RAM is still brutally expensive for these guys. Nothing to offer, but just noting that the ATI Radeon HD 3870 worked in this model, but was not compatible with Lion.

Thanks Macfury, I am running snow leopard and don't plan on upgrading at all. Thanks for the heads up on another card to seek out!
The ram would be more than I paid for the machine so the video card is what I'm hoping for.

The Nvidia GT120 and 7300GT are both weak cards.

There's a ton of Nvidia 8800GT vid cards for Mac on eBay. They range from $85.00 to $150.00 U.S..

You could also look for an ATI HD 5770 for Mac card, but it'll be a bit more expensive than the 8800GT. Lots of those on eBay too.

If you don't like eBay, my friend has a "ATI HD 5770 1GB" in perfect condition for sale. He's in Ontario. I can vouch for this card because I gave it to him. I bought it new from Apple, used it for a short time and it's been packed away unused ever since.

Where in Ontario and what do you think the card is worth?

Thessalon ON.
I just messaged him on FB and he said $150.00. That's a very good price, especially for a card in that good condition.

I only paid $150 for the machine and only to play some older games. $50 to $75 for a used card is what I was hoping but thanks. Also Thessalon is about 6.5 hour drive but again thanks.

Ya, the 5770 really is too much card for that machine. But eBay is your friend in these situations. I've had nothing but good experiences buying on there. Maybe try and find a good price on an 512 MB 8800GT.

5770s I've seen have the vendors asking for $200.

This guy is asking $105 for an 8800 GT. Maybe there's some wiggle room:

Asking and getting I guess are two different things, That's quite a bit for a 512 card.

Um, don't the 1,1 and 2,1 Mac Pro's need 32biit cards? I thought I read that somewhere.....

You are aware, are you, that 1.1 Mac Pros will be capable of running Mavericks with SFOTT?
https://oemden.com/

Hell, they'll be even capable of running El Capitan. Just a question of finding the right UEFI 64 bit bootloader.
Get this:
https://github.com/Piker-Alpha/macosxbootloader

or

https://pikeralpha.wordpress.com/macosxbootloader/

Those will probably unlock 64 Bit vid cards for your Mac Pro, although I haven't the hardware to check it.
And probably not with all possibilities.

But possibly PC cards don't have to be reflashed anymore...

CUDA, QuartzExtreme, Open Gl, all out? Haven't even caught up yet...

Look for the ATI Radeon HD 5870 anyhow!

The best of luck!

Guys, I am running Snow Leopard with no desire to upgrade further. I bought this as a gaming machine and it doesn't matter what OS I have installed. Thanks for the heads up though on the possibilities though.
The 8800 should run fine I assume in place of the original 256 card.

Kelman, you can run Lion on on the 1,1 without workarounds--however it was incompatible with my HD3870.

I used the firmware upgrade to change my 1,1, to a 2,1, which made no measurable difference in anything.

Thanks Macfury, my only concern was the ability to run my old games with too new of an OS. Hoping with the 8800 all is well with less video lag and stutter with some of the graphics. Never thought of the firmware upgrade, is it still available/tough to do?

Very easy. The first message in this thread has the update linked on the bottom.

Mac Pro 2006-2007 Firmware Tool Released (http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,1094.0.html)

Sorry, MacFury.

Can't seem to discover your 1st link. Maybe due to my system running Ghostery.

As to the link in your above quote, however,
is that Mac Pro UEFI firmware originating from:
- Netkas? Newest development maybe?
- Oemden?
- Piker Alpha?

What is the highest OSX version it allows on your Mac Pro?

Just so I know. As stated before, can't test it now for lack of hardware, but I've stashed away a Mac Pro 1.1 at a friend's place. Which we'd like to resuscitate.

Thank you!

Macfury

Must be Ghostery. It's Netkas.

To be honest, I don't know what value upgrading it to 2,1 has! I just did it to see 2,1 in the "About this Mac."

Hmmm.
Just wondering where that Netkas link got the mustard from. I bet Piker Alpha, quite a programmer he is.

Upgrading to 2.1 may not be noticeable with your present hard- &software, but (if the firmware has been well-made) will possibly have switched your Mac Pro to 64 instead of 32 bits UEFI.

That is very important for some app versions. As 64 bit versions are (I think) backward compatible with 32 versions you may not have noticed (yet).

Also, and that is actually the gist of my interest: being able to run 10.7.5 may actually allow you to use very much cheaper PC, non-Apple reflashed video cards/ GPU boards in your Mac.
None of the little Endian vs. big Endian issues any more...

How to breathe new life into a dying Mac Pro | iMore (http://www.imore.com/how-breathe-new-life-dying-mac-pro)

The good news is that if you're willing to accept some compromise, you don't need to hack anything to get a PC graphics card to work in a Mac Pro. Since OS X 10.7.5, Mac Pros will work with plain vanilla PC cards that have Nvidia graphics processors on them. Apple's standard graphics drivers now support them.

See what I mean?

So turns out the PCIe power cable at Canada Computers doesn't work, it is the PCIe to SATA connection. Plugged it into one of the HDD SATA power supplies to the card and the computer clicks then clicks off when trying to boot it up.
Anyone have one kicking around? 6pin to 6pin.
Thanks.

Are the power leads for the 1,1 and 2,3 Mac Pros not the same as the ones in the 3,1? The card side ons look like what you have posted. But the logic board side news are a micro or mini plug. Much smaller than what you have posted.

Looking at it again Chimpur you are exactly right. The logic board has the same 6 pin plug as the video card but in a micro version if I am looking at the correct plug. It is located just to the right of the removable fans on the logic board and there are two of them.
