Purchased a "Porsche Design" LaCie auxiliary disc drive.
One TB in size...
It comes with its own LaCie formatting software.
I stupidly allowed the LaCie software do its own thing, and now have the LaCie software as the drive controller, and occupying some 200MB + space on the drive.

So far have used the Macintosh disk utility to erase the drive, it will not remove the LaCie operating system. The included operating ssytem disc utility prior to El Capitan allowed one to manage the partitions on a disc,(or eliminate them), the current disk utility does not, at least as far as Ican determine.

Is there any disk utility that might ddo what the new (El Capitan) disk utility
not accomplish?

In Disk Utility you need to select the Partition option and apply it to the entire Lacie drive. This will start from scratch and rid you of the existing Lacie Software. You can make it just a single partition if that is what you want.

Be sure to select the appropriate format.
