: Looking for FW800 to FW400 cable with all-metal connectors

The title pretty much says it all.

The standard FW800 connector with the plastic shroud is absolute garbage.

Looses the connection if one just walks past it.

I have come across FW800 to FW800 cables with metal shroud connectors on both ends but even aftersearching on google and ebay have not yet found a FW400 (6 pin) to FW800 cable, 3 to 6 ft long with a metal shroud on the FW800 end.

Does anyone make such a thing at a reasonable price?

Try Monoprice.com.

If they don't have some they may not even exist, or if they do, I'm guessing they would be very expensive.

And like some others that were looking as well!! ;)

Monoprice is actually one of the first places I look at when it comes to cables.

But they have a very basic selection when it comes to FW400 to FW800 cables - their shortest one is 6ft and of course plastic.

I have come across FW800 to FW800 cables in metal.
There is at least one on ebay and the FW800 Macally enclosures I just bought also have good quality short FW800 to FW800 cables in metal.

But so far a FW400 to FW800 cable in metal has eluded me.

Don't really know why nobody makes that since both the FW400 and the FW800 connectors come in a metal version

Maybe get a FW800 to FW400 adapter so you have the best of both world?

I thought patience and perseverence may pay off.

I found one FW800 to FW400 cable with metal connectors on ebay but it hada 4-pin FW400 connector, so no good for me.
There were three sellers with metal FW800 to FW800 cables but not a single one who had a metal FW800 to FW400 6-pin.

Yes, I'm debating if I should go that route since there area number of metal FW800 to FW800 cables in metal and the FW400 cable is always metal anyway.

It would just make the final cable a lot longer than I would like.

Don't forget if you get the more substantial metal FW 800 connector you want, and some nasty accidental force is applied, it may do more damage to the FW port rather than the cable's connector and a cable is sure a lot cheaper to replace, even if it does have a plastic connector. ;)

Personally I've never experienced any problems with the plastic FW 800 connectors.

The trouble is that there is nothing holding in te plastic connector.

On the external hard drives the connectors are an inch or so above the desk they sit on and the weight of the cable along with any slight movement is sometimes enough to break the connection.

This is just a lousy connector design.
You will find lots and lots of people complaining about this if you google.

My two latest MacAlly FW800 enclosures came with metal FW800 connectors on the enclosed cable - they work much better than the plastic ones.

I think I will end up,going the adapter route as IllusionX suggested - seems to be the only option unless I stumble across the right cable by chance in the next day or two.

Very legit complaint about these connectors, krs. Once I ruined a dress rehearsal because a plastic FW 800 connector disconnected itself accidentally, so the soundtrack playing from an external disk stopped flat!

I guess it doesn't help the design that there are some manufacturers that follow the Ruskin rule and produce some cheap FW cables using poor soft plastic.

The FW 800 cables I have sure don't have or use soft plastic connectors, if fact they feel almost as solid and almost as hard as the FW 400 metal connectors.

"Soft plastic" is not the issue in my case.

I tried the plastic connector cables on the 2.5 inch MacAlly enclosure and they sit nice and tight but when I use them on my existing 3.5-inch enclosure they are very loose and one can actually wiggle them quite a bit.
The metal connector FW 800 cables I have sit tight in the MacAlly enclosure, not really any toghter than the plastic ones but they also sit a bit tighter in the other FW 800 enclosure.

Bottom line is that the FW 800 plasic connectirs have no spring clips or anything else otherthan friction to gold them in place.
That combined with perhaps a female FW 800 on the enclosure that is on the maximum end of the spec in the shroud dimension causes the problem.
Or maybe the female FW 800 connector is supposed to have some spring clips for retention.

In any case - the plastic FW 800 connectors are definitely problematic for many people, lots of complaints about that on the net.

I think I will end up,going the adapter route as IllusionX suggested - seems to be the only option unless I stumble across the right cable by chance in the next day or two.

Turns out that most adapters I find are FW 800 9-pin male to FW 400 6-pin female and the FW 800 end is plastic so that doesn't help me.

I found a few that are FW 800 9-pin female to FW 400 6-pin male - those would go with the metal connector FW 800 cables I found but they all come from the US and shipping to Canada is more than the adapter.

So I will get a few of the metal FW 800 to FW 800 cables for my problematic external hard drives and just one of the FW 400 to FW 800 plastic connector cables to use in a pinch
