: Hard Drive Limit for G4?

Jan 26th, 2004, 02:20 PM
Hi all, my g/f just purchased Panther for me from her school so I can upgrade from 10.1.5 on my G4 933. It currently has, as its main drive, one of those infamous IBM DeathStars. I'm considering yanking that out and replacing it with a new Maxtor or WD HD.

My question is, how big of a HD can I go? Been finding a lot of conflicting information on the web so any information/pointers would be appreciated. Thanks!

You can add a hard drive with a maximum size up to 120 GB in size. After that, you'd need to add a PCI-based ATA card to add hard drives that are bigger than that.

I've heard that for those who have Jag and up that they can exceed that 120 gig limit. Is that true?

I've heard that for those who have Jag and up that they can exceed that 120 gig limit. Is that true?True - to an extent. Power Mac G5's, new eMacs, new iMacs and MDD Power Mac G4's running Mac OS X can do this. Unfortunately, your G4 isn't in any of the mentioned catergories of Macs - unless your 933 was a MDD, but I'm pretty sure it's a Quicksilver.

Rats...forgot to mention that...yes, it's a Quicksilver.

For a Mac to support a hard drive larger than 128GB out of the box, it has to be a newer machine (MDD G4 or newer) and the drive must be formatted with Mac OS X 10.2 or later.

Maybe I should play it safe and simply get a new WD 120 gigger.

I can tell you that they don't work in mine.

QS 867/2MB
