I bought my iPhone5 and they'll get the porting from Fido to Rogers done tomorrow, so I simply bought the phone home and didn't spend any time in the store since it was pointless.

Now I've backed up my 3GS, and am ready to plug in my iPhone 5 into iTunes. Anything I need to be aware of to make sure I can sync EVERYTHING (note, apps, address book, music, etc)?? Is it self explanatory? I'm afraid to plug it in and lost everything, but I'm guessing Apple made sure these debacles don't happen (unlike their shipping debacles).

Just plug it in and follow the prompts?

Yup plug it in, and iTunes it will ask if you want to set it up as a new iPhone or restore from a previous backup(assuming it wasn't already setup as a new phone in store or on device), pick your most recent backup from the list and let it do it's thing. Every time I do this I'm amazed at how complete a restore is, it even restores the tabs you last had open in safari...

If it has already been setup as a new phone right/option click on it under devices in iTunes and select restore from backup. This all assumes you are backing up to iTunes, if you are backing up to iCloud you can do it all over the air on device, but from your post it sounds like you are backing up to iTunes.

You will need to set up features you didn't have on the 3GS (Facetime, etc... not really sure about others as I skipped over the 3GS). You may also need to re-enter passwords for some accounts, I know I've had to for my apple id's in the past, can't really remember about email accounts.

I did mine as a restore from iTunes. It amazes me how well that worked. Everything was set up perfectly.

Which OSX version and iTunes version did you use? I'm running OSX 10.5.8 and iTunes 10.6.3, and another user said he couldn't use his iPhone 5 due to running an old version of iTunes which is OSX 10.5.8 wouldn't allow him to update until he upgraded to SL or Leopard.

Hoping that's not true since I've got SL on order but it won't come for another few days, which means I won't have a phone until then!

Do I sync it with iTunes BEFORE or AFTER I see my carrier is indeed working on the phone?
