Apple Encouraging The Switch To iCloud

Apple encourages MobileMe customers to transition to iCloud | TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

They are shutting down MobileMe in June and I'm a little worried. I don't mind moving to iCloud but I don't really like Lion and I use a lot of music software that runs fine on Snow Leopard and I'd like to keep it that way. Do I have to upgrade my OS to use iCloud? I also have a laptop that actually runs Lion so maybe if I use that to switch and keep my MacPro on SL then that'll be fine? But then will my email on my MacPro update properly?

I'm confused.

There are people out there using iCloud with SL Mail - but it doesn't appear to be a painless process, and you lose all the other advantages (syncing of Address Book, calendars etc.). Mail will work - but that's it.

Instructions on setting up iCloud mail in SL etc.:

Any reason you don't want to move to Lion in particular?

I have thousands of dollars worth of music software on my main computer and I need it all to work to make a living. I've read certain programs aren't running properly yet so I'm leery to make the switch. It's a can of worms type situation.
