Mid 2010 Mac mini - Hard Drive Replacement
I performed a hard drive replacement on a Mid 2010 Mac mini today, and as the new Mac mini has very few interior design changes in terms of part placement, the same procedure (more or less) applies to the Mid 2011 Mac mini models as far as I can tell.
The verdict is in: The hard drive in the Mac mini is not user replaceable friendly. Specifically, the logic board requires removal in order to pull the drive out and removing the logic board requires a special tool sold only to Apple Service Providers (it's not a screw driver...). I have to say that the design is pretty brilliant when taken apart and examined, though less brilliant from an upgrade perspective. The replacement drive procedure took me about 30 minutes, doing it for the first time.
If you're considering buying the new Mac mini and think the stock drive won't be sufficient (in speed or capacity), I'd recommend selecting a different BTO drive option from the very start and save yourself the hassle and labour down the road.
not to mention the fact that APP will cover the part, diagnostic and labour for a failed drive too
