Lost safari!!!

Hi guys!

I have Safari 4.0.5.

I'm using my iPod touch to write this post as I'm unable to open any pages in Safari on my iMac. Here are the symptoms:

- obviously I have Safari on my iPod. It's working fine there.

- software update on the iMac uploaded without a hitch. I didn't install anything though.

- apple mail opens and retrieves. I sent a test to myself and I received it. Google mail app will not load.

- however everytime I open Safari on the iMac, I get blank screens. Nada. Nothing!! No pages whatsoever. Oh yeah my iTunes opens! Additionally when I try to reset safari it does not reset.

Here's something that confounds me. As a test I just opened the firefox browser app that's already in my app folder and it opened! Thankfully I have a backup browser I can use for the time being! I could've used it to post this but I'm already at this point on my iPod.

Did I inadvertently cause this?

Please Help!!

Safari still will not launch. I've performed and completed the disc utility repair (Macintosh HD>First Aid>Repair disk permissions). I'm not sure what else I should be doing. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Send a message via AIM to SINC
Hi Sharon, have you tried downloading Safari from the Apple site and reinstalling it? That might work.

Reinstalling... sounds good, Sync.

Also, another trick with Disk Utility besides repairing permissions, try verifying the volume (and repairing if necessary).

Then... from recent experience with Mail... I'd suggest opening up iSync prefs and MobileMe Sync - and reset your sync settings. You will then have to overwrite address, calendar, bookmark etc MobileMe data with the data on your Mac - or visa versa (whichever is most current).

Also suggest downloading Onyx and try a few small things.
Under Cleaning/Internet", Onyx has routines similar to Safari reset.
Under Maintenance/Scripts" see when the last daily, weekly, monthly scripts were run. Run any that are behind schedule. The weekly script takes a while to complete.
Under Maintenance/Rebuild, Onyx can also trigger your mac to rebuild the Spotlight index. Best to walk away from the computer while it does this task - the Spotlight icon at top right of your screen will have a little dot in the centre of it while it is rebuilding the index - or you can click on the icon to see its status.

Even if something here gets Safari back up and running - I'd recommend downloading the Drive Genius Demo and performing a surface scan to check for bad blocks on the HD.

I had a problem that seemed to stem from Mail. In fact it was bad blocks on the drive affecting some files in the syncservices folder.

Something about the safari plist file, I remember vaguely. Close Safari, then in home -> Library -> Preferences, move com.apple.safari.plist to the trash (don'T empty trash yet!), and try running Safari again.. config file might have gotten corrupted somehow.

First create a new user account in System Preferences>Accounts

Go into the new account and see if Safari works there. If no then Sinc's suggestion of reinstalling Safari, then repairing permissions is likely the fastest way to resolve the issue.

Alternatively if you have an up to date clone on an external drive and everything is working correctly when booted from the clone, just clone back to your main HD.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

Ok I've just opened another user account and Safari launches from it.

So what does this mean? There's a block somewhere in the original account? Or should I try Sinc's suggestion of downloading a new Safari? What happens if I do what Sinc says.. and use the app cleaner app to drop the original safari app in it? Or I shouldn't download a new one since the original one launches in the other user account?

Thanks

The only problem I've been having lately with Safari is ordering Pizza,
Damned PizzaVille website stopped working properly all of a sudden.

I even tried opening a new account on 241 Pizza, But that failed to let me order too.

Arrrrrggggghhhhh!!!!

I had to use the phone to order pizza for the first time in 5 years.

Damn you Apple...

Go back to your original account. Go to your Home folder. Then open the Library folder, then the preferences folder and find: com.apple.Safari.plist.

Or to put it a bit more formally: Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist

Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the trash but do not empty the trash. Safari should recreate this file and work just fine. You will have to reset your homepage and whatever special preferences you had in Safari but other than that you will be good to go. <Insert "Fingers Crossed" emoticon here>
