Has Apple discontinued the USB modem dongle?

My Aunt just bought a new iMac, and was wondering how to fax from it, through her printer/scanner/copier. I told her she needed the Apple modem, but it seems like it's no longer available at the Apple store. I saw a third party one at U o of T's computer shop downtown a couple of weeks ago, I guess it'll have to do.

thanks for any info,

How did I miss this? I read like 8 Mac web sites daily. When was it discontinued? Was there an official announcement?

Thanks

No, the part number was just discontinued/became no longer available in the Apple ordering system, and online store. Not exactly press release material.

I think macintouch.com was covering this. The gist of the discussion was that the usb modems didn't work reliably with the more recent Macs in some configurations (so buying one elsewhere may not be a solution). Rather than working on making make them compatible, Apple apparently just dropped them.

Because faxing is now so antiquated that even the Amish are allowed to do it.

And yet still prevalent to this day. Go figure.

I think my fax machine has been used about 5 times, in the last 10 years. I keep around because you run into a remote business that still insists on a fax, for some strange, odd reason.

Us young folk use that there thingy, called da interweb.

Maybe so but it works easily for things like getting documents signed quickly. This is important in certain sectors in particular, around these parts at least, lawyers offices and real estate businesses depend to a considerable degree on fax.
