No offense to John, but I would stick to uTorrent. I've tried Transmission several times, and have never found it as fast as Vuze/uTorrent, nor as stable as uTorrent (Vuze is anything but stable the way it consumes memory). Every once in a while I grab a new copy of Transmission and try it again, the last time being 2 weeks ago. Within 30 seconds of starting a torrent, it completely hung up my system, to the point where I couldn't force quit it, and eventually (I think I waited 20 minutes) couldn't do anything but pull the plug on my computer to restart.

I don't use Transmission or other torrent programs, but do you really seriously believe that your experience reflects a typical Transmission user's experience??

I know from reading John's stuff that Transmission is an extremely popular client with tonnes of satisfied "customers" -- I would find it hard to believe the program would have such a following if it were as lousy as you describe, n'est-ce pas?

Thanks chas for pointing this out. No, I do not believe this is a typical users experience, and I don't think it is a lousy program. I give my apologies to John for making it appear so. Re-reading my post I see now how it came across, and it was not the way I intended. It was still early and I should know better than to post at that time on a Monday morning.

I was trying to make two points: that it is slower than other torrent programs (which I had discussed lengthily in the Transmission forums, and spent countless hours trying to prove/fix), and that my past experience showed it wasn't as stable as what I have found uTorrent to be (which has never crashed for me even though is just a beta product). The system hangup just happened to be my most recent experince and thus was freshest in my mind. None of the other times I have tried it has it ever had that significant of a problem. If it had, why would I go back and keep trying it every once in a while? I probably never gave it a fair shot on this past go around because of the problem, and maybe after the upgrade I should give it another go.

Which brings me to a question, John mentioned earlier that Transmission is 64 bit, how much of a difference will this really make when running it?

Opposite for me.

Tranny was fastest by a country mile for me!

Tried them all. Tranny beat em all.

Super light weight to boot!

For a torrent program, there wouldn't be much of an impact, but people like buzz words. So buzz words they shall get. You may notice an improvement if you have hundreds of torrents, but for the average user it's a non-issue.

As to your earlier post, it's certainly not the average user's experience. It's a known issue that affects a very small percentage of users. I've had a similar issue on my own iMac, which was related to a hardware fault in the Yukon ethernet chipset. This was fixed by a logic board replacement under warranty.

I'm always a little disturbed/amused when I see people using "tranny" for "Transmission," apparently blithely unaware of its other usage.

"Tried them all. Tranny beat em all" will probably go down as one of the most unintentionally amusing things I have ever read here.

uTorrent.com

Another vote for uTorrent here.

The team behind uTorrent actually made the first BitTorrent client ever. They know what they're doing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_(software)

I've used it for years, and its great.

So I tried the rest, and the speeds were horrid in comparison to Trans. So I went back, and discovered all the actual features.
Since the Snow Leopard upgrade, it's faster and WAY more reliable than those others.

And yes, I learned of Transmission from it's number 1 fan here

Well, I went back and looked, and other than my recent incident, it's been quite a while since I've really given Transmission a good shot (I think 1.14 or something like that). So, if my Snow Leopard ever gets here (I should have just gone to a retail store rather than pre-ordering through Apple), I'll give Transmission another shot.
