Maybe it's a Sharp thing then. I have a 720p 32" and a coworker has a 1080p 50" and we both have the same issue.

This is on a 32" Sharp Aquos, 1080p.

By default it will not line up, if you change the setting on the tv to pixel by pixel it should work.

I am typing on this setup now. Excuse the picture quality, bad iPhone pic.

No workie on my 32" 720p. I'll check to see if my coworker has done that on his 1080p.

I have my macbook (previous generation with intel graphics) hooked up to my PN50A550 via mini dvi -> hdmi with no problems.

I dont play 1080p videos though. Last time I tried, it stuttered away, so I just stick to 720p. I think i just chaulked that one up to the intel graphics (someone please correct me if I'm wrong and theres just an issue on my computer)

I am probably heading to a local eOutlet tomorrow to pick up an ordered item. I can try to check it out for you with a white MacBook and the mini-dvi to DVI adapter (they probably have a dvi to hdmi cable I can use).

I'll let you know how it goes.

EDIT - my white MacBook has the new graphics chips so the test might not be a true representation for you.
