Power Mac G5 Uniprocessor Firmware Update (#4): Problems with 1.6GHz models

We've been following reports of problems with Power Mac G5 1.6GHz models after installing the recent Uniprocessor Firmware Update, the most significant of which involve significant system instability. Readers continue to submit reports confirming these issues; Lim Chee Kiang writes:

"After the update, USB devices, including keyboard and speakers will freeze after about 5 mins of use. Thereafter [the OS X kernel panic screen appears]. It then goes into a loop of restarting and re-freezing. AppleCare guided attmpts at clearing the PRAM etc., all to no avail. I sent panic logs to AppleCare's product specialist who has asked me to wait while they investigate and probably work on a patch. My PowerMac G5 SP 1.6 is now unusable."

Update no longer available via Software Update? Reader Richard Clark wonders if the update is being pulled by Apple after checking his un-updated Power Macs:

"This morning when I went to use the Software Update on other workstations the Uniprocessor Firmware Update is not showing up. As of 9:00 AM CDT [Thursday] it was still available at Apple's website."

As of this morning (Friday), the update is still available for download from Apple's website.

In Australia and the web site is out of date.
Lots of good deals on Retinas, previous high end MacPros and current MacPro 6 core bundles in stock. [email protected]
