Fire up you SW update, people. Safari 3.1 is out.

And according to at least some accounts, there's a decent speed boost on this new release.

Safari 3.1 to Bring Performance Boosts ("Snappier") - Mac Rumors

Webkit Build r30090: 3495.8ms
Safari 3.1 Beta: 3408.0ms
Safari 3.0.4: 9302.3ms (extrapolated)

Amongst other improvements, the latest Safari beta does seem to incorporate the speed optimizations found in the latest Webkit builds. Webkit is an open source project that serves as the basis for Apple's Safari browser. Webkit's nightly builds offer end-users access to the latest (potentially unstable) Webkit updates. A number of other browsers also use Webkit and will also benefit from these improvements.

Definitely faster. Doesn't seem to do much else though. Still can't run Pith Helmet.

Recommend having a look at FFx Beta 3. Has come a long way and finally looks respectable.

Wow! This version is blazingly faster then the last one. No matter which site I go to, it just loads it so much faster. Incredible.

Quick question: What does the new Database function do in the Security Preferences of Safari? What sort of information will be put there? That seems to be the only new thing I found while checking out Preferences.

Good question. I did some banking sites and nothing showed up there. I'd like so see some better cookie removal management. Specify locked cookies and erase all the other junk automatically. Although my biggest want this is to be able to highlight a bookmark in colour and a better sort.

Mine continues to load sites slowly, stumbling on something or other. It has been doing this since at least version 3, if not before. Running Firefox immediately after, I get a much quicker response. I wish I could figure out what the problem is because I prefer Safari to any other browser.

A few tips I've compiled over the years that seems to speed up surfing. Maybe one of these will help:

1. In preferences, General: tell it to remove History items after a couple of weeks. Any longer than that and it starts to be a REALLY big list, which of course has to be loaded. Less time would be even better.

2. In preferences, Bookmarks: UNCHECK the bonjour stuff unless you're actually using it. Saves having Safari check for it all the time.

3. Preferences, Autofill: turn OFF the third checkbox ("other forms") and turn ON the first two if not already turned on. This stops Safari searching for data to try and "fill in" to every form box on a web page. This one made a BIG difference back in the early days. I can't believe it's still on by default.

4. I'm pleased to say that Safari Adblock and SafariBlock BOTH work under 3.1 (they had "broken" some Webkit builds earlier this week). You can make up for blocking ads on other sites by always clicking through the ones on EhMac that interest you (I do!).

5. Empty the cache periodically.

6. Using OnyX or something like it, flush the favicons cache.

7. Check your fonts folder for conflicts.

8. Try to keep your bookmarks lean and organised.

9. A long shot here -- turn off IPv6 if it's on (Preferences/Network) and see if that makes a difference.

10. As suggested by others, switch your routing addresses to OpenDNS's ones, and compare page loading experience.

I miss my Safari Enhanced "Debug Menu" already,
Now I have to wait until Safari Enhancer catches up to this version of Safari.
(I tried to reinstall Safari Enhancer but it won't work with this version of Safari,
I reinstalled Safari 3.1 because I think I damaged it with the old Safari Enhancer installer)

Not sure if I like that because I like to periodically flush all of the caches.

What a relief...
Java seems to work better now on the online game web site I frequent.

Don't notice any speed gains either. The Webkit was faster. Camino is still noticeably faster than Safari. IE in Windows still seems as fast if not faster then Safari as well.

Every change there has been for Safari or Leopard people tout the speed increases. Did they have complaints with the Safari speed before that these changes? Perhaps there are improvements but I have never noticed any differences. I do like Safari, even with the few buggy issues I have. Maybe one day I will try Firefox on my Mac, it's what I used when I was on my WIN98 PC.

1Password

HI,

If you are a 1Password user you will find that Safari 3.1 likely isn't compatible with the version you had installed. I did a check for an update and managed to catch the new version 1 second after it was released!

Yes...I noticed the problem with 1Password,
Thanks for the heads up on the update.

I need my 1Password within the Safari menu bar,
Now if I can just get my Debug menu back.

Dave :)

Don't see history cover flow, nor do Apple tout the feature. And they sure promote cover flow where ever possible. About the Safari 3.1 Update
Was this generated by that bot people are talking about?

" ... I miss my Safari Enhanced "Debug Menu" already ..."

" ... Safari’s hidden debug menu
deconcept › Safari’s hidden debug menu
Do this by opening your Terminal and inputting this line:
defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1 ..."

And entering 0 [zero] instead of 1 reverts to the default, ie no Debug Menu.

You don't need Safari Enhancer, or the Terminal, to enable the Debug Menu as the Develop Menu replaces it. It has most of the same functions; most importantly to selfish old me, it has the ones I use.

Go to:
Safari: Preferences: Advanced:
... and click "Show Develop Menu in menu bar".
No quit, restart, etc necessary. There it is.

I'm noticing the improved JavaScript support; really helping the load times of some JavaScript heavy pages.
