mac problems

My mac starts making a loud noise kind of like it is working VERY hard every few minutes, even when it is doing nothing. It started about a week ago. Any idea what it could be, what I should do? Specs are in my sig. nRunning 10.5.1. The noise lasts anywhere from a minute to several minutes.

Also, I have NEVER been able to use sleep mode since I bought it without something weird happening. Either it just won't turn back on, or I will get a screen telling me that I need to restart my computer, like when you get a kernel panic. It is not even a year old btw.

1/ Launch Console and watch for activity when problem occurs.

2/ Check in your Accounts prefs for erroneous startup items.

3/ Boot from your OS installer disk and Verify Disk with Disk Utility.

4/ Run a directory repair utility, such as DiskWarrior.

5/ Unplug all non-OEM peripherals and check Sleep issue.

6/ Reseat all RAM - remove any third party, if installed.

7/ Remove any third party PCI cards, if installed.
