Powermac G4 RAM question

I was looking into picking up some RAM as a birthday gift to be put into a Mirrordrive G4 (1.25 single) and I am finding some outragous prices for 'apple approved' kingston ram. The variations are from 229$ CDN for 512MB apple approved and 77.99$ for some generic crap (I won't buy this). These prices are from compusmart, but they have some kingston ram that is PC3200 (not the PC2700 the G4 is specified for) and is priced as 77.99$ for 512MB.
Is the 'apple approved' ram just a ripoff or is it worth it? Also can the G4 handle PC3200 and just downclock it to PC2700?

PC2700 should be easy to find and inexpensive.
Corsair PC2700 512MB = $46.00
Kingston PC 2700 512MB = $58.00
OCZ PC 2700 512MB Value series (CL 2.5 timing) = $46.00

The OCZ G5 platinum (2x256MB) timing (3-3-3-8) is $80
Shop around.

I got RAM at Staples, for my MDD 1.25GHz dualie. Going back 6 months or a year but I paid about $80 for a 512MB stick of PC2700. Works good in the G4 Mini as well.

Just got some RAM at MacDoc for my intel iMac and his price was very competitive, so he might be an option for you too.

I actually needed it today so online was no option. I opted with the Kingston ValueRam from compusmart...80$ + tax so it was not that bad. Lifetime warrenty is the best and the price is a hell of a lot cheaper than the apple approved stuff.

I wouldn't worry about the generic stuff that CompuSmart has, as long as it is the correct type. I have 1GB of RAM in my G4 tower, most of which was snarfed from old Compaq and IBM PCs my company was getting rid of. Anyways, if you have problems, I'm sure CompuSmart will take it back.
