How would anybody know when they've been on sale for a week?

Why would they be any less durable than a comparable PC?

I've heard at least 5 first hand stories of mini HDDs dying in a 6 month time frame from date of purchase.

2.5" HDDs have been used in PC and Mac notebooks for years. I'm not sure what the MTBF ratings are, but my personal experience has been them lasting as long as or longer than 3.5" HDDs.

Maybe there was a bad batch used in the Minis...

I wouldn't pin these premature failures on the fact they're installed in Minis.

5 bad hard drives out of millions of Minis shipped isn't quite an epidemic.

Out of all the mac users i know in reality, it is quite a large percentage.

Plus, a bad batch shipped at different times? nice.
