My mini has I gig in it and an external firewire 7200 rpm HD. I use it to capture video and it doesn't drop frames, so I think audio would be ok as long as you don't try too many tracks. Ask Macoholic, he does this for a living and has done some tests on his mini.

hey hey!

I thought I felt my ears burning!

I did do some testing with Garageband and my mini, a special Garageband project released by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. My Mini with 512MB of RAM handled the 16 or so audio tracks fine. Note however that only ONE TRACK used any realtime effects, and no tracks were realtime software instruments. The project consisted of pre-recorded audio tracks. Anything realtime, such as software instruments or effects, will load up Garageband. having said that, a mac Mini with as much RAm as you can afford should be okay. Google any Garageband tips to optimize your Garageband projects.

Don't forget to budget for an appropriate USB or Firewire audio interface.
