G5 tower owners, hows your airport signal strength?

i found the airport signal reception on my new G5 to be rather sub standard.
reception signals are extremely weak.
can that tiny antenna be upgraded?

i did some search and found that this is a common problem/ short coming.
how's this with other G5 owners on ehmac?
anyone has a fix to boast wifi reception of the almighty G5?

I'm not very thrilled with mine. I get between 1 and 3 bars. For some reason, I get 4 when first turning Airport on, but it quickly drops down. Sometimes I lose it altogether. And I'm nearly within line of site- only about 45 feet.

Proof that true with all desktops you should really be using an external antenna

FWIW, Wireless can be such a hassle.. it's performance in less than stellar in most instances. There are a few things you can do to increase performance however. Depending on the station and card you have, there are things you can do to both to gain signal strength.

Pro Solutions (can get costly): http://www.quickertek.com/

Home made: http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html

I rarely have dropouts on my iBook. I've played with the Airport express to make it work it's best. Switching channels and playing with Interface Robustness. I steadily have 4 bars.. I'm sure it would be different for the PowerMac.

Good luck

THat is the problem with building a machine totally out of aluminum, it makes a great faraday cage....stops all signals like kryptonite stops super man.

i read that the aluminum case definitely has something to do with its weak ability to pickup signal. thanks fo confirming draz.

dona83
that not might be entirely true.
my old G4 picks up signal left right and centre like a magnet, where the G5 gets none ZERO!

when i setup the airport express base station in another room, i get decent signal as indicated by macstumbler and airport radar widget.

however the problem is b/c i need to 'freeload' on other open wifi in my building, now i can hardly log in!

looks like an external antenna is thw way to go, but they are so expensive!!

vexel those solutions are expensive, for the same investment i'll go dr bott. at least they look much nicer.
