TMR is most likely correct, the only files that are not actual viruses that the mac likely won't open are video files. Other possible files the mac won't open are ZIP files which are most likely viruses and exuctable (.exe) files which again are mostlikely wintel viruses.

You can open ZIP files on the Mac ...

That's the route I went with my folks. They had the choice... shiny new iMac that I strongly recommended, that I could help them out with and would last them well, or... el-cheapo Dell box. They went for the cheap and the next day my dad called because the windows email program was deleting all incoming attachments incase they were bad, and he didn't know how to make it let attachments come through.

Neither did I. Sorry Dad. Buy a Mac.

As an addendum of sorts to this story, I did anticipate every possible thing she'd need in switching to OS X, including the installation of things like VLC, RealPlayer, Windows Media player, etc. And of course I also finagled Mail to upload her old Outlook Express mail, and copied her old documents and spreadsheets over to the mac. I even offered full tech support. She's not a moron (thanks to those who defended her), she's actually a retired Special Education teacher, who taught in the least desirable location (Jane and Finch) by choice for 30 years. This was a labour of love. It's just a head-scratcher for me that she'd want to go back.

I dunno man, if she's complaining that she can't open attachments in her email, that's the reason she wants to go back, and the ones she's complaining she can't open are viruses, then she's a moron.... unless they're real attachments, and there's a problem with the proper handler or Mail setting.. then all it needs is a bit of tweaking.

I guess having the patience and understanding to teach special education (at Jane and Finch no less) gives you the patience and understanding to use Windows.

Although her experience with computers probably been mostly Windows so she probably thinks all computers have spyware and viruses, including Macs. She just doesn't have enough knowledge or experience with both platforms to compare. So your best bet is force her to stick with OSX. She might not realize it's better but it'll just save you from cleaning the viruses and spyware for her.

I think its uncalled for to call someone's aunt a moron. Twice. Just because someone does something that is stupid doesn't mean they are stupid. That's not being constructive at all.

You'll have to make sure that the attachements that aren't opening are really viruses. You could email her some video files, and other file types from your account, then see if they open from hers to verify that only viruses are being blocked.

anyone who tries to open attachments when they've been told are viruses, and complains they cant do it and want to switch back to a pathetic excuse for an operating system because of it is a moron.

am i basing this on too little information? maybe it wasn't explained to her that those were viruses and she hasn't been taught which emails to ignore, then in which case i withdraw calling her a moron, but i stand by my opinion.
