Some MacBook Pro models BANNED from US FLIGHTS!

Certain MacBook Pro models banned from U.S. flights amid battery fire risks

U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has banned certain models of Apple Inc‘s MacBook Pro laptops on flights, after the company recalled select units which had batteries posing fire risks.

“The FAA is aware of the recalled batteries that are used in some Apple MacBook Pro laptops,” the agency’s spokesman said in an emailed statement on Monday, adding that the agency has “alerted airlines about the recall.”

Apple said in June it would recall a limited number of 15-inch MacBook Pro units as their batteries were susceptible to overheating. The units were sold between September 2015 and February 2017.

No doubt that ruling will be a nightmare for many Airline Travelers, especially those carrying MacBooks, and I'd sure be surprised if any agent or baggage checker will be able to differentiate a 2015 MacBook model from other models, or whether their batteries have actually been replaced for the approved ones.

Just to ensure people catch the point: it's various MacBook Pro models released in 2015 / 2016 / 2017 - so that's quite a few possibilities.

I can't imagine what I'd do if I arrived at security in time for my flight, and they told me I had to leave the laptop behind...

Is this a situation where better safe than sorry is the best approach? I know they had some issues with a Samsung phone model before, think they banned those from planes as well if memory serves me. I personally think if I were the airline I would take the safe approach and do what they are doing, ban models that could be a hazard. If anything were to happen mid-flight it could be disastrous or at least make for a very unenjoyable experience for fliers with that airline. I know I would feel pretty freaked out if something caught on fire mid flight and might lead me to look for other airlines in the future.
