Making the $1,249 iPhone XS only costs Apple $443
https://nypost.com/2018/09/26/making...sts-apple-443/

No real surprises...

One of the real questions a lot of people should be asking themselves, Do they really need a smart cellphone, or would a much cheaper DumberCell phone work for their needs just as well???

Even if it would, my two bits says they will spend the extra money just to keep up with or exceed the Joneses ~ And Apple and Samsung etc. all know that. You might even call it marketing.

So $800+ is going to well paid designers, marketers, heck even the retail staff are reasonably paid, and of course shareholders.

Given that their production costs are so high I do not think it is out of line. I am surprised they cannot get it down cheaper with the quantities they must be ordering, with volume comes cheaper prices.

I do think they could offer more for the price though specifically when it comes to storage. Base model really should be 128 gigs and go up from there.

Ditto but in my case I make and receive (not counting those #$%# telemarketers) about 30 minutes of calls/mth. Texting and emails though I do plenty. I would be very interested in a texting/emails/internet/camera only "phone". If that ever get released, I'll be all over it.

That sounds like my iPod Touch except it's WiFi only.

And more to the poster's point, it's not a phone which he uses.

I bought an iPod Touch way back to the iPhone 3 thinking I did not need the phone. Big mistake as I learned about a month into ownership, so bought a iPhone 3S ( or was it G in those days?). Never been without one since.

But it doesn't text. It would need a phone number, a sim card. Texting, emails, googling, IM and camera would be all I need. Phone carriers don't seem to offer this type of plan. So why don't they? Would too many people select this? IDK

They do not want to cut into their sales. They do offer that sort of thing though for a iPad with 3G. I am guessing most of the big guys offer something
