MacBook Pro (non-retina) upgrade

I'm about to inherit a 13" non-retina MacBook Pro, I was looking for something smaller than my 17" that was making things too challenging to carry.
Friend gave me his old 13". Just needed to remove files, so I bought him a 3TB external.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to max it out and use it for the next 6 months @ least. I'm going to install a SSD for sure, and max out the ram (16G).

Anyone w/ experience w/ this unit know of anything I should look out for?? Or will this be the classic HD install, and boot? I'm considering taking out the optical for a 2nd HD. Is the kit sold anywhere in Toronto?

Is there anyway I can install Mavs?? I don't think the Apple does anything but 10.10 correct?? Although, i might not be against 10.10 since there's a great dev feature i could use - but i'd have to move my iPhone to iOS 8 too.... anyhow, just looking for some wisdom. Pretty excited. Haven't own a SSD powered lap yet.

Thx

H!

I upgraded my girlfriends 13 cMBP to an SSD a while back, and it was just as simple as any HD upgrade I've done, so surprises or anything.

If you've ever used the mac app store to download Mavericks before, then it should still appear in the purchases tab and downloadable for you. Thats what I do, then make a bootable USB thumb drive with it and you're good to go. I even still have access to Lion under purchases! lol

What year is the MBP? 09 max 8gb. 2010+ 16gb.

I'm running a 2011 with 16gb and 180gb ssd. Thing is flawless. But I wish I had USB 3.0

Pretty sure it's the last edition. 2010+, so I'm looking fwd to throwing in 16! But either way, i'm maxing this out. The $300-$400 that it will cost be to bring this Tasmanian devil status will totally be worth it. Might even spring for a new batt.

Added to all that, the SSD prices are astonishingly low. Which one did you drop in?? I'm looking @ this 240G Crucial that i saw on sale for around $110. 250MB write but still a great price.

Crucial has a replacement for their MX100 line up.. it's the BX100 LOL. So far, i think it's the best bang for the buck.
