Cool midi recognized but can't get any input volume

I'm trying to record in GarageBand with a keyboard connected via a midi USB cable.

I have set the keyboard up in Audio Midi Setup, and using Midi Monitor it shows input from the keyboard correctly - the keys I play show up as data received.

But in System Preferences -> Sound -> Input, when I select the midi input (LogMeInSoundDriver), and play the keyboard, it doesn't show any input level. When I try the Internal microphone it shows input when I speak, but nothing when I select the midi input and play the keys.

Same thing when I try to set up a keyboard track in Garage Band. It recognizes that there is a midi input, but when I record, it doesn't record any sound.

My keyboard is turned on, midi monitor shows input, and the volume on my keyboard is up (I can hear it when I play). What's the problem??

Thanks for any help!

(using a MacBook Air, OSX 10.9.4, and a Technics SX-P50 keyboard)

Midi doesn't transmit any audio, it just transmits information like note-on, note-off, the velocity with which you press the key, etc. You can use Midi to control the software instruments in GarageBand.

If you want to record the audio from your keyboard you need to use the audio outputs and connect those to your Mac.

If you need to turn your musical ideas into sound, you need a MIDI synthesizer at the least.
Look into this list of free Mac midi synths: Free Soft Synth | Best Free Software Synths
Any other questions are best put before HOME RECORDING | Create better music at home./ (which seems to be ultra-new), Home Recording Tips : Free Studio software and Audio Guides ( which seems fully fledged), homerecording.be | de geluidsopname en muziekproductie community (my home buddies & certainly fully fledged).
And in the US, a pillar: Forums - Forums
And then a lot. But I don't specialize.
And this, of course,http:How to 'play' GarageBand | Macworld
Have fun reading/ playing!

Thanks for your quick replies iSynth and hexdiy.

My problem was indeed that I was treating the midi-connected keyboard as an audio device. When creating a new track in GarageBand I was selecting "Audio - record using a microphone or line input", thinking that the midi connection was the line. Now it is working when I am selecting "Software Instrument - play sounds from your Mac." Maybe Garageband has built in synthesizers so I am able to turn these ideas on the keys into sound? Glad it's finally up and recording - thanks again for your help!
