With a nas you won't need to buy the server.app

Depending on your nas you may be able to tell it make it jbod so each drive would be separate but no redundancy

If you decide against a nas then you will need server.app so you could use a das and share it for time machine

Jbod -just a bunch of drives- multiple drives in an enclosure and will mount independently

Das- direct attached storage

there is only one app in the app store.. it's OSX server.

You could install 3 drives in a 4 bay NAS if you like. I would still setup as a raid5. then you create shared folders for what you need.

Thanks folks.

Well, I've got this GRAID which I was sold at the apple store, now I see that it is not what I should've bought.

However could I use it all the same. It has USB connections. Could I use that as my data / iphoto HD, and connect it to a NAS like a QNAP w/ Western Digital RED drives? Would TIME MACHINE work through that NAS then?

If so, then it looks like I'm into spending $800 (QNAP - TS-469L that's what people have recommended) and 4x$80 (for Western Digital drives - any suggestion on exactly which ones?). This looks like over $1000. Am I right that that is what I should be spending?

Thanks again folks!

Seems like a lot of money, overkill.

I have several DAS devices with server.app and a NAS, I don't really need the NAS with the server setup

Depending on your NAS you should be able to attached your GRAID to it and use it as a time machine backup. But for $20 you could do the exact same thing with your iMac.
