Intermittent Wifi Issue + iMac

Argh!

I realize this has been touched on before (and likely by me) but I wanted to start fresh and try to resolve this issue.

The wifi reception on my 2011 27" 2.7GHz iMac running SL keeps stalling out. The other machines in the house, using the same Bell Sagemcom router, have no issues whatsoever. They are two Macbooks, both running SL as well as iPhones and Apple TVs.

It's the same pattern every time. The machine boots up, wifi signal is strong, go to a page, read for awhile, try to go to another and nothing. Maybe sometimes a few pages before it happens but it always happens. Signal still indicates full strength.

Turn airport off, turn it back on, the signal catches and all is fine for a little while. Annnd, repeat.

I have done many things to try and correct this. I have made sure there are no other interference causing devices present. I have rebooted the modem. Lather, rinse repeat.

'Perhaps it's your modem' you'll suggest. 'Well no' I'll reply. It was happening with a 2Wire modem from Bell prior to this one.

If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them. The frustration factor is growing by the day.

Thanks all!

I had the issue in mountain lion on the same machine and never got it fully resolved. I just ended up using an ethernet cable instead of wi-fi. The thread on this issue on the apple support forums is absolutely massive. There are a lot of people who never had a resolution.

Hello,

I have the same issue with my 2010 Mac Mini. (Using Bell Fibe Sagecom modem but Mac Mini is connecting to it through and AIrport Extreme).
Definitely has nothing to do with the network router setup because all other Macs and devices work fine.

I've considered buying a new Airport card from eBay.. around $30 and the install should be pretty easy.

Thoughts?

In general, most modem/router combos seem to be pretty bad. (Try Googling it - you'll see complaint after complaint) Save yourself a lot of hair-pulling and just get a proper router, and use the modem in bridge mode. I got an Airport years ago (since updated to a newer Airport) and it's been great. I'd highly recommend one - even though they are more expensive than other routers. I've had a lot of those too - more hair-pulling.

That said, I do have a Hitron modem/router combo from Rogers at the cottage and have had absolutely no issues with it. However, the cottage is all one floor and smaller than our house in the city, which has living areas on 3 floors. The SMC modem/router I have at home with Rogers does not have the range of my Airport and cannot reach all corners of the house, as the Airport can.

You will see from the MASSIVE thread about this issue on the Apple support forums that buying an Airport router won't necessarily solve the problem. It didn't in my case, and it didn't for a ton of other people. The one thread I was subscribed to on the issue as about 170 pages long last time I checked it. A lot of people had given up like I did and just hard wired their internet.
