Help with colour cartridge

We have a Lexmark all in one printer and print only in black and White. Does anyone one know why the colour cartridges go down and have to be replaced when the colour is not used? The B&W cartridge is only $5 and the colour ones are $25+ so the only reason I can think of is that it forces us to buy the coloured ones even if we don't print in colour. Any other suggestions? Are we setting it wrong? Thanks for any ideas.

Inkjet cartridge will dry out if it isn't used, and a dry cartridge will usually fail the capacity test.

If you rarely print colour, then buy a black and white laser printer. You'll pay way less per print, and laser toners don't dry out (they're powder based anyway).

Before running the first print of the week, inkjets run a cleaning cycle to keep the jets from clogging. For occasional users as much as 90% of ink consumption is during the cleaning cycles.

EDIT: Should you happen to run prints from a second user account it may also run a cleaning cycle thinking it is the first print run that week. I am hoping this info is out of date but I am not betting on it.

Some printers will use the colour ink to make grey shades.
