Unexplained doubling of data usage in the last 2 months
Hi all, I've got an iPhone 4 with a 500MB data plan from Fido. I've never used more than 400MB/month of data until 2 months ago, when all of a sudden I apparently used 1GB and 700MB and in the first 2 days of my billing cycle this month, even when I have consciously stayed away from using 3G data, I've already used 105MB, putting me on track for 1.5GB. These usage numbers come from Fido but the internal iphone usage gauge is giving me similar numbers.
Has this happened to anybody else? I don't understand what's going on...in the last 2 days the only time I've been without wifi has been in my car driving to and from work. I haven't been watching any video or downloading music on my phone...iCloud backup is off. I really can't think of what's eating all of this data.
Your problem may very well be what Joker Eh said and I hope that works for you.
In the last month I have been having a similar probem on my 3GS.
When I look at my Cellular Phone Usage it shows a lot more than my usual pattern. Yet when I go to the Bell Web Site and check my account my usage it is more like my regular pattern.
(Check your provider's web site to check).
There have been some threads on the Forums suggesting that the Cellular Data Usage report by the phone is not always correct and can sometime reflect total data useage including WiFi which of course throws everything off.
I am still monitoring the Forums and Web Sites for answers, but there are a number of people saying it is a bug.
I had a similar problem about a hear and a half ago on my iPhone. The culprit was open pages in Safari. Since this was prior to the iOS method of multitasking (4.0), I am not sure that it would still apply as Safari is suspended when not active. Just open Safari and see if you have open tabs or pages there and close them. I left a couple of sites open and every time my phone accessed the network it was refreshing the open pages and consuming data. May not see like a big deal, but one of those sites cost me over 300mb of data. There was a bug with that site and just manually checking email would consume 10mb of data. I was able to figure it out with a Genius Bar employee and demonstrated the issue at a Telus store. Both had never seen anything like it. If I hadn't been on top of this it would have led to a very expensive bill that month. Since then I always leave Safari as a blank page.
