iPhone Requires Pass Code Before It Connects To iTunes?

What the hell is this? I've never seen this before, but here it is in Lion. I entered the pass code and it worked, but WTH?

I have seen this before on some occasions on Windows. Have yet to see it on a Mac yet, but I think there is some way that the computer can detect whether the device is yours and be able to sync (a stolen iDevice for example could not be synced if it had a passcode, but I highly doubt that)....

iPhone and iPod touch: About backups
Quote:
If you protect your iPhone or iPod touch with a passcode, you will be prompted to enter the passcode when you connect to iTunes. Once you successfully enter the passcode, iTunes will recognize that device as authorized and you will not need your passcode to back up or sync. When restoring from an iOS 4 (or later) backup, if the device had a passcode set, iTunes will ask if you want to set a passcode (and remind you that you had protected your device with a passcode.) iTunes will not ask you to set a passcode when restoring from iOS 3.x and prior backups.

I've had the iPhone since release day of the iPhone 4 and have never seen it before, so why now?

Is this your first use on Lion? Although I don't recall mine doing that. Does it do it still or only one time?

First time you connected the phone to iTunes with the phone locked? I get it on my iPad (which has a passcode, unlike my iphone) regularly.

I had Lion on for three weeks back when Lion came out and never got that message, then reverted to SL for a couple of weeks and then back to Lion again. Never once asked me for the pass code until today. I update the iPhone every second day BTW.

I have NEVER, repeat NEVER been asked for my pass code on any iPhone I have owned before, nor has my iPad 2 EVER asked for it.

I've seen this on locked iPhones dating back to as early as 10.5. Definitely not a Lion thing.
