My ATV2 experiences to date

When I got my ATV2 I liked it a lot. It started having problems though where it wouldn't work with home sharing properly. The problem got worse, and even more annoying, completely inconsistent. It would work fine for a day, then not work at all. That graduated to the point where home sharing rarely works. An example, I got it to read my library last night and got 3/4 of the way through a movie... and the movie stopped. The ATV2 had disconnected from my Library again. All internet functions on it work fantastic though and always have.

I browsed around trouble shooting and it seems a ton of people have the same issues, so I was wondering what people's experiences are here?

The amount of fixes I have attempted could fill a page. If it's in the Apple Discussion forums, I have tried it lol. The most success I get is maybe a day of it working correctly. It's nice that Netflix and everything works well, but the home sharing issues is a huge disappointment. This is the first Apple product I have owned that has been a complete disappointment in fact.

Flawless for me. I have a fully Apple networked home, 1 Extreme, 1 Time Machine, 2 x Expresses, 2 x hacked ATV's, 1 x ATVII. Wifi blankets a very long house with an optimum signal everywhere. I have had zero problems with Airplay and Netflix. A modded Mini 2.0 (4RAM, 120SSD) runs itunes, with a few gigs of media via firewire 800. Nothing but good things to say.

I have not hacked the 2 yet.

If it's still under warranty, why not swap it out for a new one? To me, there is a limit to how much fiddling / frustration I'm willing to put up with.

Also, there was a new version of iTunes released yesterday and one of the noted fixes was improvements to home sharing. Have you installed iTunes 10.2?

I've had similar issues, but they are fairly rare. I too have a fully Apple networked home... 1 Airport Extreme, 2 Express, AppleTV, AppleTV2, Mac Pro, iPhones, iPads, etc. My network is strong, and nothing ever cuts out... EXCEPT the AppleTV 2. It has only happened maybe 4-5 times, but it has happened, just as you described. A couple of times I was watching a TV show and "poof" suddenly I'm back to the main menu. A couple of other times, it would not show my Home Sharing network even though iTunes was running. I had to quit iTunes, reboot the AppleTV, and restart iTunes. Meanwhile, I am able to watch trailers, so I know it's not the network connection.

It has gotten better, and in fact, hasn't happened once since I upgraded from my old tower to my new Mac Pro. Not sure if it was an iTunes update that fixed it, or a glitch on my old computer, or just coincidence. Either way, I have a feeling it's related to the computer running iTunes, not the AppleTV.

Honestly, from what I have read I don't know if it would do any good swapping for a new one. Plus, the most frustrating part is that it DOES work. Just not all the functions lol. Anything internet related works great. And when the Home Sharing does work, it works fine. Even when the Home Sharing is down, all internet related functions work completely fine.

The problems I am having are extremely common. If you do a search for something like "AVT2 home sharing issues" you will finds posts with 100's of replies in them. It seems there are just a ton of network things that can cause the problem. Going the all Apple route jimbotelecom mentioned could be one of the only sure fire fixes in some cases.

I installed the new iTunes update and have my fingers crossed that it might help. I am going to test it later today.

a7mc, speaking of computer glitches, I went as far as to reinstall my whole system on my Macbook. We don't have cable TV and use the AppleTV for a lot of our entertainment, so I was that motivated to fix it.

The only temp fix I have found that works with any success is unplugging the ATV2 for about and hour. When I plug it back in it works fine. But, it can still randomly cut out like when I was watching a movie last night.

On the ATV2? I think right now it's at 5 hours. Honestly, I spend to much time having to reset it that I have had it all over the place. And at night, I have just been leaving it unplugged since when it's been unplugged long enough, it seems to work for a bit.

Do you have any tips sleep setting wise?

Just wondering if the ATV2 is wired to your network or if it uses wifi? If it's wifi what router do you use and is it 2.8GHz or 5GHz?

Was just thinking the the sleep function could be causing the issue. Maybe setting the sleep timer to No Sleep and when you no longer need it force it to sleep.

It has been flawless for me. So much so that I am cancelling my cable tv from Rogers. Netflix along with sharing from my iMac abd MacBook Pro have had me watch 1 cable show in about a month. I was basically giving Rogers money for a service I do not use anymore. If I was into sports or watching the news, I would need cable, thankfully I get all my news online and sports, well I dont care.
