Trying to setup custom ring tones, do I need call display?

Hi

I recently got an Iphone 4. I did not get call display because it was an extra add-on to push up the cost.

I was hoping I could setup custom ring tones for my contacts, so at least I know who is calling based on the ring tone.

I setup a custom ring tone, on one of my contacts to test it out. I specific selected the custom ring tone for that person in the contacts, and every time they call I get the default ring tone.

Do I really have to have call display to do what I am wanting to do?

Without call display, the phone has no way of knowing who is calling, thus no way to assign the custom ring tones.

Yeah, no way to do that without call display.

On a side note, it's outrageous what they charge for call display in this day and age. It costs them practically nothing at all. Canadian telecom gouging at its finest.

Bell they said I have to take the extra's package, which includes call display. I could not just add it alone. I think the person I spoke to is wrong.

The person you spoke to was definitely wrong, call display on it's own should only be about $5, still a total rip off when you consider the cost to provide it (next to nothing), but I digress... it sounds to me like the sales person was just trying to upsell you. That said, depending on what other extras you may or may not already have the bundled extras can be a pretty good deal, if you were planing to get most of what it in the bundle anyways...

Caller ID is available separately from all three major carriers.

It's $7 from Bell, $8 from TELUS and Rogers.

Usually, the $15 package is worth it, as it often includes unlimited texting, which then allows you to choose something like a My5 Long Distance or double your daytime minutes.

But if you are fine with your plan, you can just purchase Caller ID on its own.

Total rip-off, I agree.

And I can't believe a Bell rep told you it couldn't be purchased separately.
