Use the telephone to call the stores?

Apple is pretty good about stock. In the early days of the iPhone they were putting stock levels on the website but since I haven't seen them for the iPad, my guess is that they are still in stock.

My suggestion would still be to take your laptop with you. Much easier doing the first sync with your own laptop. I tried to do mail setup on my iPad manually, settings were exactly entered and for some reason it didn't work. I synched my iPhone's settings and bingo the iPad was receiving and sending mail.

You do need a computer to set it up for the first time. The Buffalo Apple Store asked me if I wanted to set it up before I left the store. They were offering the use of store computers to help people set their devices up that didn't have their laptops with them.
