Plugging in iPhone freezes iTunes

My wife has an iPhone, and a Vista laptop. She downloaded iTunes and tried to get her iPHone to sync. The first time, the iPhone popped up in iTunes, and then iTunes froze. Every subsequent time, iTunes just freezes. The only way to regain control of iTunes, is to go to the task manager and end the iTunes process.

And before we get into PCs suck, I then tried connecting the iPhone to my MBP. Upon connecting it, iPhoto launches - which I then quit. I then launched iTunes, and iTunes (8.2) freezes on my Mac. On a side note, I also own a first gen iPod Touch, which has never frozen either Mac I own, or any PC (Vista or XP) that I have connected it to. Its just this particular iPhone.

Right now I am doing an Erase and Reset on the iPhone (Settings -> General -> Reset), and awaiting that to finish before I try connecting it to the PC again.

I'm convinced its not iTunes, or Vista or the Mac. Any ideas on what it might be on the iPhone that is causing it - or is it in fact iTunes related?.. or anything? I'm at a loss.

Is this an iPhone that's been upgraded to the 3.0 software?

If so, has the iTunes on either/both machines been upgraded to 8.2?
