choose default search engine iOS 12

So finally got an iPhone. New 6SE $250. Partly to avoid having to use google as the search engine.
What do I then discover? That google has paid $ 9.5billion to Apple to remain default search engine for iOS. Oh misery.
Any way to work around that and choose qwant as default?

Download Duck Duck Go from the App store. Don't be surprised when you find out that Google now owns duck.com as well. Once you install it, you can reject Google and go to DDG without being monitored as Google has relented and turned over duck.com to DDG.

Icon below, bottom row second left on my iPhone 8 Plus. Just open that search app to avoid Google as I do.

I tried DDG at least 2-3 years ago I think. Maybe 4 or 5. Didn’t like the interface, didn’t like the behaviour and generally wasn’t convinced it did a good job. As good as google almost certainly not although I didn’t test often. The problem for me with google is not whether or not it’s effective but rather the power and overall sleaziness of the company.
Which also bothered the EU which launched a suit - maybe just France did it - against google’s practices. And initially won. $16B ?
An offshoot of that situations Qwant which doesn’t track your searches and produce thoroughly comparable info, albeit in a different order that google’s. Not as relevant to your browsing history - there are advantages to tracking - but good. I’d be interested in your responses.
Anyway, I’d like to continue with it but am not sure it can even be added to my nice little iphone. Any ideas on that one?

StartPage uses the Google search engine but does not put you and your searches into the Google Data base. Been using it on my computers for years. Not sure if it is available for iOS devices.

BTW On the computer side FireFox also uses Google as default, you have to go into FF prefs and disable whatever search engines you do not want FireFox to automatically engage.

Did google really pay $9.5 billion to be the default search engine when Apple lets you change that so easily? Not saying it is not true just seems bizarre as with 3 taps you are now using a new search engine on your iPhone.

Settings>Safari>>Search Engine

You now have the option of Google, Yahoo, Bing, and DuckDuck Go.

I have done it on my MBP. Qwant is now default for both Safari and Firefox.

According to several sources produced by Qwant from search « google 9,5 milliards apple*» . Not sure how reliable. ( Don’t know how to insert links in replies.

Thanks. And I wonder too if it really can be that easy given the cash involved. I will try it. )
Thanks again.
