prior to iTunes 12

I like to know when things update. I used to be able to see my phone ap icons in iTunes with a flag that a update was available. Have we lost this? Remember I took awhile to figure out the 'x' made the mini player full screen and I had to come here to figure out how you got to the mini player from full screen. I don't mind changes but I also believe don't fix what ain't broke. Have we lost the ability to manually update installed apps through iTunes? Thanks in advance.

Nope.
In iTunes 12 when you go to your apps you should see a red streak in the Upper Right hand corner of an App that has an available update when looking at the "My Apps, or My iPhone or My iPad apps

And for the updates, there is a section dedicated to updates and you can either update each app by clicking on it and clicking update or clicking the Update All Apps at the bottom of the screen.

Officially embarrassed. I was just used to things being up and down on the left hand side. Now to the updates...
Thanks

No need to be embarrassed. It blends into so many icons it can be hard to see.

If you have your iDevice set to sync automatically when plugged in and it happens to also automatically update (thanks iOS 7!) by itself, only the apps NOT on your device will be missing the updates.

Only if you have auto update enabled on your iOS device.
