iPad Air 2 - Return and buy Mini 3 or keep?

Hi guys,

Probably been discussed to death, but here’s my thread on the size difference between the ipads.

So I have a 1st gen, non-retina mini. I love the size of the thing, but the slowness is unbearable nowadays (usable, but painful) and the non-retina screen, while functional, looks like something out of 1998.

Air comes out, intrigued by the thinner, lighter, smaller form factor, but hang onto my mini because surely, touchID is right around the corner.

Air 2 comes out. Thinner, lighter, AMAZING display, super fast CPU, 2 gigs of ram and of course touchID. Everyting I want, right?

So I buy a fully loaded iPad Air 2, 128GB w/ LTE… And I receive it…. And I hate it.

It is so obnoxiously large. Yes, everything about it is great, and unlike my briefly-owned iPad 3, light and pleasant to hold. But it’s too big to carry around. I took my Mini EVERYWHERE. Slipped it into a pocket (curiously, no bendgate, guess my IQ wasn’t low enough)

Insanely fast and responsive compared to the Mini. Insane. Screen is amazing, believe the hype.

But all I can think of is how much I’d like the same tablet in the mini form factor.

But when you have the Mini 3:
- Poor color and contrast screen
- Slower CPU
- Only 1GB ram
- Many fewer LTE bands
- Still “fat” compared to original mini
- Only ~1xx$ difference between it and state of the art air.

Long story short, I have two questions:

1- How bad is the screen of the retina mini? Is the narrow gamut really noticeable?
2- How good is the A7 chip / 1GB Ram with iOS 8? Does it lag/stutter?
3- Should I just shut up and get used to the Air form factor? Will it get ‘easier’ to carry around with time?

I browse a lot and read a lot. Some email and occasional video. I do not play games so worse 3D performance is not relevant to me.

Can long-time mini or air owners chime in? Thanks

I have the original retina IPad Mini and love it. The size as you mentioned is fantastic and I love the screen. The screen is leaps and bounds better then the non retina iPads, but now comparing with my iPhone 6 plus it is not as vibrant, but far from terrible. My iPad is normally sitting infant of my screen at work using the smart cover so it is on an angel. Nothing lags or stutters it is very quick and snappy for everything I do on it (safari, mail, some games, music, screen sharing PC's and Mac's). It is a nice step up from the non retina mini, much faster and screen much better.

i will try to score a refurb mini 2 from the US, low mem and cellular to tide me over till next year. Surely the mini 4 will be just as good as the Air 2 right?

What do you mean by fewer LTE bands? I thought the iPad air and iPad mini all operated on the same bands.

I've owned the iPad mini, and iPad mini retina (mini 2). The screen is nicer on the mini 2. I don't see a point in getting a mini 3. You get a finger scanner, and AC wifi, woop di do. My advice is to just buy a used iPad mini 2, instead of the 3. Same performance, same screen.

1) The screen is definitely better on the iPad air. However, your not going to notice the difference unless you compare the screens side by side. The iPad mini retina's screen is good enough for the general public. Only the perfectionist will knit pick on this.

2) The A7 chip is fine for what your doing. I've never used iOS 8. I don't own an iPad mini anymore, but that's due to me not owning a tablet anymore. I sold it because I didn't need it anymore, not because I didn't like it. I did find the tablet crashed a lot while using safari, but that was on iOS 7, 7.1. I was also jailbroken, so that could have been a cause for the crashing. On video, I never had any issues. I used my previous iPad mini to watch netflix, youtube, and other videos as well.

3) If you don't like the form factor now, don't buy it. I did have an original iPad 1. I went from that, to an iPad mini, and then to the iPad mini 2. Even today, I find the iPad airs too big to hold. If you not holding the iPad for a long period of time, then you might be fine with it. However, its much easier to hold the iPad mini, not just due to weight, but also size.

A couple of other notes. I did find better performance with the iPad mini 2, over the iPad mini 1. Also I'm a hobbyist photographer. Even the better screen on the iPad air, did not make me want to buy the iPad air. I always have all my recent photos (taken with my dslr) on my tablet (now on my phone, since I don't own a tablet anymore). So photo and screen quality is important to me.

My Fiancé and I went to get her a new iPad tonight. I kept quiet and let her pick between an air 2 or a mini 3. She picked the air 2 because it felt lighter to her.
