So, I'm two years into the three year contract with Rogers for my iphone 5. I've been thinking about upgrading to the iPhone this year, but then I started thinking.. "Will I be able to keep my 6gb for $30 deal I've had sine the phone came out?"

After talking to Rogers I can safely say that NO you can't keep it.

Now I'm in a quandary.. Do I upgrade, or wait 12 months and put off the inevitable?

You can keep you plan as long as you want. Just don't get a new phone subsidized. Even a plan with 1GB of data will probably be at an increased price.

Just shove the SIM card in a new iPhone and go. Don't even have to tell Rogers. And an iPhone purchased at full price is unlocked so you could jump ship if you needed to easier one day if you had to.

If your iPhone 5 works well then I say hold off for one year, and buy a new iPhone next release outright and keep your 6GB plan.

Have you ever actually used 6GB of data in one month? Even at maximum usage, when I was tethering my MacBook to my iPhone, I only ever approached 3Gb once. It may just be that you don't actually need that much data. Now we split about 3GB between three iPhones and never go over.

I'm in a similar boat but with fido... I agree with the previous suggestions, if you actually use much data, buy an unlocked phone outright, the savings in the long run are much better. Where it gets complicated is if you only use 1gb of data...

For myself, I use 2-3 most months, and have gone over 6 a couple times, that combined with the savings of being able to put in a local SIM card when traveling make an unlocked phone a no brainer for me.

That 6gb plan is antiquated and they'll do their best to take you off it (i'm on it s well + was told this a number of times). Now, you're free to call and negotiate but they'll be quick to tell you that you can't make any changes to the plan.

Besides, when have you known Rogers to be anything close to reasonable? I was complaining about their roaming fees online, and you should see what they replied with.

Rogers are just like the new airline policies: 0 perks, charges left and right. Anyhow, give it a shot, and keep us posted - if you do call.

I was going to maybe got for the 6+ but there are pro going to be some deals on 5s units left and right.

I have found Rogers to be pretty decent for a large company. I used to have my internet through them. I had a monthly cap of 90 gigs which I was going to switch to TekSavvy as it was cheaper and I could get unlimited. Rogers did not have unlimited, but they lowered my monthly fee and gave me 300 gigs of monthly bandwidth. Now I ended up switching anyways as I was going over that 300 gig limit as well and they did not have unlimited. A few years ago I switched my cell plan with rogers. I had been buying unlocked phones for a while so had not been on contract. I was paying over $100 a month and not getting much out of that. In the end I pay around $70 a month now with a 6 gig plan that they were not even offering on any plans at the time and no contract.

They are not perfect, thats for sure, but they have been a million times better then any of my dealings with Bell in the past.

I just bought a used iPhone 4S (New to me) then got it unlocked and then switched simms
from my old useless Samsung S3 Fido contract phone,
Still have another year left on my plan, Why switch plans, Better to just switch phones.

I'll probably get an iPhone 5S next time around, Don't like the new iPhones.

With the switch to 2 year plans we now will pay more for less data, when I asked Telus about upgrading to iPhone 6 they said I'd have to switch to their new plans. The same services under a 2 year contract make my bill $125 and tax per month.I personally will keep my $55 plan and buy a phone when I can afford it unlocked.

We switched our plans. We had the 6GB plan on two lines and some other plan on our third line. Between our 3 lines we had 14GB of data. For an extra $5 per line per month ($15 total) we switched to the 20GB shared data plan with unlimited Canada-wide calling, voicemail, caller ID, etc. (before we only had 200 weekday minutes), so for us it was worth the switch.

Rogers recently sent me a letter saying my 6gb will now cost me 35 up $5/month - the letter said to remain competitive they are raising prices.. seriously?!?
then a month after that - my bill doubled.. I phone rogers to complain - that they are financially killing my accounts.
they said we want you out of your 'grandfathered plan' instead they are forcing me into a share plan that I don't like which cost the same for less .

that said I will be moving my account to koodo- as they have some pretty aggressive plans. Sick of rogers.

Got something similar, with the same excuse, from Bell a few months back.

Called them up to register a complaint, told them that I wasn't going to quit yet, but that I was going to start opening promotional mail from the guys I left for them, something I hadn't done since I left. I also told her that, in 7 years of dealing with the company I'd left, as crappy as their service was, they had never given me an arbitrary increase in rates.

I also told them that I could do better than quit. The CSR asked, with some indignity, how? I told her that I had told every member of my family, my siblings, their spouses & kids, my parents & inlaws, never to go to Bell. I informed her that included some 20-odd people, who weren't currently on Bell & never had been. Things got pretty quiet on her end.

I wished her well with her extra 5 bucks a month & hung up.
