iPhone 5 Sleep/Wake Button Replacement Program

Quote:
Apple has determined that the sleep/wake button mechanism on a small percentage of iPhone 5 models may stop working or work intermittently. iPhone 5 models manufactured through March 2013 may be affected by this issue.

Apple will replace the sleep/wake button mechanism, free of charge, on iPhone 5 models that exhibit this issue and have a qualifying serial number.

According to the serial number, my iPhone 5 qualifies for this program. I've never experienced any problem the button and I'm debating whether to do it or not. The web pages says to backup and then "Erase data and settings in Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings". Is this just for privacy purposes or does it mean that I may get a different device back? My phone has been well cared for: never dropped and minimal wear on the screen. I'd hate to get a refurbished phone in questionable condition!

I just checked my iPhone 5 and it too qualifies under the program. That noted, look at the note under the serial number.

Given that notice and since I, like you, have a pristine phone and never been dropped and shows no sign of this issue, I will do nothing unless the issue appears, which may be never.

I thought Apple do not fix iphones and only replace with a refurb one?

Besides.. don't all refub get an all new casing + glass? So you likely don't see the difference between a refurb and a new one.

My phone qualifies but I'm on os6 jailbroken with no problems. If they do a one on one exchange i'll go for it.

Yeah, I'm leaning that way too. The only thing is, don't programs like this usually have a sunset date? IOW, if the problem starts two years from now we won't be able to get the fix?

This iPhone 5 program is for phones with the issue - not iPhones that qualify under the serial number range but don't have the issue. It's not a pre-emptive repair program.

Does anyone know if they actually repair your phone or do they replace it with a refurbished phone?

They send it out for repair (Apple Store in Burlington at least).

Our iPhones (wife's and my 5's) both were experiencing the iPhone battery issues. Mine was fixed (battery replaced) in store while I waited. Hers had the battery as well as the Sleep/Wake button issue. Hers was sent out for repair because they didn't do the button repair on site. Took about 7-10 business days. In the interm she got a "loaner" from the Apple Store. The loaner really was for not much more then phone use and basic services. I couldn't restore hers onto the loaner because she has a 32GB and the loaner is/was a 16GB. They gave us a heads up about that fact so it wasn't that big of a deal.
