Moving the iTunes Media Folder

I've not done this in YRS but as i looked around, I just realized that when moving the iTunes media folder to a new location, iTunes copies the folder to a new location for you. duh.

But what if you sent the files over already? Any way of just pointing to the new location in the prefs?? Would hate to have to copy this all over again, but i'm not mad.

Anyhow, if anyone knows... cheers.

I would not move the media folder, but rather copy the whole iTunes folder from the music folder.. and then hold option to point itunes to open the library at a different location.

If you move the media folder, your library still stays in your music folder..

The way I always do it is to go into iTunes pref and change the default folder location and then go to file > ??? > consolidate library. That will copy over everything to the new location and keep things in tact. Once complete you can delete the old material.

Thx folks. Looks like I got it to go super smoothly. Although I had a super odd set up (which was done long ago). I had my music on the ext and the rest of the files on board the lap - not sure how that took place. I pretty much did what Andrew described, but I somehow ended up w/ about 20-30G less on the music side. I'll be doing a folder by folder comparison soon (somehow) to see what happened but outside of that, all is looking pretty good on my end.

I am not sure why you would want to move the media folder and not move the library...
