Unlocking an iPhone officially through the carrier does not void the warranty.

Any other method does void the warranty.

All of these carriers should be forced to unlock phones at no cost period.

As soon as the contract is up or bought out the phone should be unlocked. I could easily live with a $5 cost to help cover the cost of the time spent talking to inept employees.

If it was free then I might actually sign a contract, until then I'll keep going month to month.

They should never be locked in the first place. It's my phone, how dare they take the position that they have any rights to it. As long as I pay my bill, anything else is none of their business.

That's mean, I sold my Virgin iPhone because they refused to unlock it,
Even though I paid for it and sold it at a loss because it was locked to Virgin.

I think a big part of that issue is with Apple, not the cell phone providers.

I needed a smart phone I could use in Europe and which I wanted to unlock to buy a SIM card there to use for a month.
I was with Bell and opted an HTC smart phone which I could unlock myself for $15.-
And then I bought a 1000 minute SIM card in Europe for $10.-

Apple must be getting some coin from these providers to lock these phones? To bad Apple can't say to the providers sorry phones are unlocked.
