On a volunteer basis I'd like to send out a mailing to about 300 eMail addresses from Mail. The list is old and will probably include many bounces. The purpose is to request information corrections and a renewal of interest in our group. Would prefer these mailings go out one at a time so I get clear bounce reports.
Something that Automator can do? I assume so. Have never used that app.
Sending a single email to 300 addresses could easily get your IP (or email) added to a spam blacklist.
I'd highly suggest using a service like Mailchimp for this. It's free for small lists (under 2000 members). Pricing | MailChimp
Regardless of how many accounts you send the email to, the bouncebacks will all be unique to the sender, and will tell you why it was bounced back. No need to send each person a separate email.
We've used MailChimp for a friends' spa business - worked out great! Nice features to filter out duplicates and non-working addresses in your mailing list, too. Recommended.

At first glance your recommendation makes sense. But the MailChimp site lists two features that deal with Spam — Delivery Doctor and Inbox Inspector. Neither are included in their free package. Or am I misunderstanding something here?

I would recommend MailChimp as well, or Campaign Monitor, just some kind of bulk email system designed to mail more than 10 or 12 addresses.
Plus, when you send an email to 300 addresses you would be surprised how many won't receive it. You'll receive the obvious bouncebacks for things like bad addresses in your email client, but you won't receive any indication if your email gets caught in a spam filter at the ISP or user level. A bulk email tool will give you some delivery data so you can actually see your open rates. If you have any links embedded in your email you'll even be able to see who has clicked on them.
Even if you had to pay to do this the cost is not significant, likely under $10 for a list of 300 regardless of which provider you use.
